Gun Control

With recent school shootings, gun control has been a hot topic in our country. Referring to this week’s reading, reflect on your opinion of gun control.

  1. In my opinion, gun control is very important. However because of the all the school shootings I think that they way we control guns can be edited. It may also be that fact that people who should not have guns (the mentally unstable, children) get them and then problems occur. In thr book this shows that when Jack gets his gun he clearly does not know how to use it and almost shoots people, and kills a squirrel. I hope that he does not do something stupid later in the book with this gun. I also feel that the gun and Roy are a bad influence on him.

    1. Ashley, I completely agree with you. With gun control going less shootings would be going on, but would this drive psychopaths to maybe apply to a job as a cop just to be able to handle a gun?

    2. People shouldn't be trusted with a gun because they could be a psychopath like Tierra said. I don't understand why we have guns at all..

    3. I agree, they need to change gun control. There has been way to many school shootuings.

    4. I think we should have guns but only in the rights hand of people. They should have to know the consequences of a gun if used wrong. I don't think is the guns that are killing the people but it's the people killing the people.

    5. Maybe people should take physiological tests to see if they're fit to have a gun

  3. Gun Control Uncontrolled?
At the start of page 23 in This Boy's Life, Toby gets a rifle from Roy, when both adults are out Toby cleans the rifle and he loads it and unloads it like it was something precious. Also when the adults are out Toby likes to point the gun at people, unloaded and loaded. Recently gun control has been thought about, some like it, others not so much. Maybe for Toby gun control would have been good so that just in case an accident happens he doesn't end up shooting somebody.

    1. I do agree that gun control is needed in Toby's household. However his mother is not doing the greatest job at controlling Toby. I think that his mother should have gotten rid of it a long time ago or been more strict about it.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you, Toby does need gun control. Roy encourages Toby to use the gun, but his mom doesn't. So the gun control issue could be solved by the mom holding on to the ammunition.

      Delete
    3. Well Roy shouldn't have gaven Toby a gun until he was much older. But like Ashley said in Toby's household the gun is needed. His mother should have been more strict like Ashley said. His mother shouldn't let him have the gun until he was at least 18 or older.

    4. Roy gave him the gun. Toby mom didn't like the gun. Toby's gun need to be locked up.

      Delete
    5. I disagree with you Amanda about the gun needs to be locked up because it's his gun. I would agree that he needs to learn gun control. Toby could go to a hunter safety course to learn how to control a gun.

      Delete
    6. I agree with Travis, he should go to a hunters safety course to learn gun control

  4. I think gun control is important but there should be restrictions on guns. There should be people that should not have guns like kids.Toby was doing a stupid thing with the gun. Even though it was unloaded he still pointed it at someone and when it was loaded what would he do if he pulled the trigger on accident? I think that if kids want a gun, their parents should get a gun safe and keep the gun in the safe until they are 18 and if they wanted to use it, they had to be with their parent.

    1. I agree with you Danielle. Guns aren't for little kids. You shouldn't point guns at people, you're right. The kids parents should wait until the child is 18 or older.

    2. I agree, but maybe it should be 21 till you can use a gun. At 21 you are an adult and you are more mature.

      Delete
    3. I agree..you will be more mature..if you wait until you're 21

      Delete
    4. I do agree that guns should not be used by younger kids, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some in the house for safety reasons.

      Delete
    5. Having restrictions is a good idea. I don't think it will really prevent other people from getting guns though

      Delete
    6. Danielle theirs is a gun restriction for owning and buying one that is 18?

  6. With Roy giving Jack a gun, as irresponsible as he is, is just an example of terrible parenting. This does not mean ban all guns. Maybe make it harder to get guns, but to say that guns are dangerous is absurd. It's the people who use them.

    1. I agree, guns don't kill people people kill people. If they knew how bad jack was I don't think they would have given him a gun

    2. Mario, I agree with you guns aren't dangerous they can't pull the trigger themselves. Humans are a danger not only to our own species but to all species. Roy, as an irresponsible parent shouldn't be giving an irresponsible child a gun, well he really shouldn't be giving ant child a gun.

    4. This is a good start for a post. But if you could change the gun law what would you do ? Also I agree with you on what your saying about him not having a parent I feel like that's the reason why he lacks a good mindset. Lastly I like what Richard said. Guns don't kill people. People kill people

    5. I completely agree with you. Guns don't kill people, people kill people

  7. Why would people have guns? Guns can kill people. Little kids shouldn't have guns, because someone can get hurt or killed. People really shouldn't be allowed to have guns. They're dangerous and harmful. People should be at least 18 or lord to have a gun.

    1. I do agree that young children should not have guns, especially Toby because of his intentions with it.

      Delete
    2. I agree that children do not need guns, but guns do not kill people. The people who own the gun do. If we make it harder for people who are more likely to harm people with guns to have guns less shootings would happen.

    3. I think guns should be aloud into people's hands, as long as their in the right hands.

    4. I think people should be allowed to have guns just with restrictions, I don't think there should be a set age Limit.

      Delete
    5. I agree with Travis, guns kill people, people don't kill people. The gun can misfire or the trigger can accidentally get pulled.

  8. Guns should obviously be regulated. I'm not saying that guns shouldn't be allowed but it should be regulated and there should be some requirements such as age restrictions and psychological tests. Toby is obviously too young to be able to have a gun. I know Roy and his mom hid the ammunition in a box but Toby knows where it is. He is also pointing it at random people while it is loaded. He is also home alone a lot and we all know that he get mischievous when he is home alone. He pretends to be in the military. I know he doesn't intend on shooting someone but accidents can happen.

    1. I agree that accidents can happen and that he is too young. It is also Roy's fault for buying the gun for him.

  9. I think that guns should be allowed but with restrictions. Toby was hiding pretending that he was a united states sniper, aiming and pretending to shoot the people walking by his house. Guns shouldn't be lying around the house for kids to have access to.

    1. I think they should have made more restrictions like put the gun in a locked gun case when the parents left.

    2. I second your opinion with restrictions.

    3. Liam and Richard, I agree strongly with you both, guns shouldn't be allowed around children unless they have a license or something to prove they actually know how to shoot a gun.

    4. I agree with our point your trying to say, but I have to disagree what you guys say. I believe that everyone should be able to have firearms. I just thing people need to more carful, like put out ads about gun control etc. But I like what richard said, there should be a upper person controlling the guns in the house hold like a gun case

      Delete
    5. I think they should make a law that everytime you leave your gun somewhere is has to be locked up somewhere a kid like Toby couldn't get his hands on it

  10. Gun control is soimething we should be worryed about. Kids should not have a gun. If they do their should be a parent present when it is out. No kid should be able to walk over and grab the gun and "clean" it. While Toby mom was out he went and got his gun to clean it. When he was done he walked around the house pionting it a things. Toby would sit at the window and pointed it at people walking by or driving by. They he started cocking the hammer and letting it snap down. He was able to get to the ammunition Roy has there. He is able to load up his rifle. He can end up shooting some one. He is in dangering him and everyone around him. He should not have a gun.

    1. I agree with you Amanda, but I feel that kids should not have a gun in general. And in Jacks case, he should not be able to have a gun at all.

      Delete
    2. I sort of agree but if kids can't control guns then they have no respect for their parents or anyone else. I was brought up to respect people, guns and your parents. If you can't control yourself then you don't deserve to hold a gun.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you Hunter; but I also think gun control should be taught to kids even if they don't have a gun. It's an important lesson for life.

  11. Throughout these chapters we see Roy give jack/ Toby a real gun. At this point we wonder, should Jack have a gun? Should kids have the right to a gun. Etc. like for example we see jack point a LOADED gun at people ,and even people with babies. At this point I feel like jack shouldn't have a gun. But in general I feel guns teach people responsibility and ownership. I truly believe in the 2nd admement. But in jack case ,where jack has no father fugue to teach him the way with the gun. Jack is struggling with what he thinks is right and wrong. So we see him struggle with the gun. Lastly I truly believe in gun rights in control. You just a need a good leader or mentor to teach you. Witch jack doesn't have.

    1. I agree with you ray. It does teach people these things, but when people do not have a person to teach them right from wrong, then people having a gun should be put in question.

      Delete
    2. That is exactly right ray. When there isn't a good leader than the students won't be taught right, so the students won't know good from bad, right from wrong, pointing a gun

  14. In the story Jack (Toby) gets a gun from Roy. I think that Roy should have waited till Jack was a little older because he doesn't know the proper way to use the gun and if the gun gets into the wrong hands it could end in a really bad way. The gun control now a days is really bad. I think that you should be able to have a gun but only if you know how to use it and you use it for the right thing (not killing people).

    1. I agree that jack should have been older to have the gun because he wasn't using it appropriately and used it as a toy

    2. They should make a restriction so that you have to be a certain age to have a gun. This would prevent Toby (jack) from seriously injuring someone or possibly killing them

  15. Only people who have mental problems do gun shootings. Not the people who responsible clearly Toby has some problems clearly he needs help what he doesn't need yet is a gun. I think his mom did wrong by letting him have it. What I don't understand is why his mom didn't see a gun whole I mean you would clearly see a whole. Now guns for hunting should not be banned like some people have tried. Guns like Ak-47s and m16s should be not banned just regulated more like they are now. Also the only way you can have one is to go through a test to see if your able to have one.

  16. Gun control is a serious problem today, there have been many school shootings. It's dangerous and it needs to be controlled but not to the point where no one is allowed to use or have possession of one. Guns should be used for protection not for killing innocent kids and adults. People bring up gun use in America and say how it's so terrible that all of these shootings are happening,b but you can't just talk about it you need to change it so it doesn't happen again. In the book Toby points the gun at different people even when the gun is loaded, he's joking of course but if he's not careful he could accidentally shoot someone.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I believe that gun control should be up to the individual. This means that don't take all of the guns away just from the people that have mental problems. Just like the old saying guns don't kill people people kill people. But what Toby is doing with his 22 is wrong he needs to learn more self control and not to point it at anything that he doesn't attend to kill.

    1. I agree people need to have more respect to their guns and other people. Respect is the key part if you have no respect for anyone then you should not be able to touch one.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you Travis, but I also think gun control is more than just respect. It has more aspects than that.

      Delete
    3. I agree but I think his parents should teach him to shoot it right

  18. Jack got a rifle from his mothers creep boyfriend when he found them, and his mother soicificly told him not To point it at anyone, or she won't teach him how to shoot.as for almost all young teens, they like to disobey directions, especially if there is a gun involved. (This is how most accidents happen)
My opinion on gun control is that guns don't kill people, people kill people.

  19. I think guns aren't controlled enough. Toby shouldn't have a gun. He is a good kid but doesn't make the best choices. He could injure or possible kill people. I think there should be more striced regulations so people like toby dont get guns int here hands.

  20. I think Toby is old enough for the gun but his mom or Roy should teach him how to use it instead of him just letting him discover it himself and ending up hurting someone or himself

  21. In this section of the book Toby has grown up a little bit but not a lot the fact that he's more of a juvenile delinquency has really shown in the last few pages. Such as throwing eggs at the thunder bird, skipping school to smoke and watch movies, and pushed the car down the hill.

  22. Gun control is a definite prob line as depicted in this boys life, Unlike most I don't hold a strong opinion on gun control though I do find that at this day and age the practicality to own a gun in a suburb for protection is flawed. Most people own guns as a hobby rather then protection and that is reflectedrd in this boys life. The idea that a hobby is worth 10 of thousands of life's is silly to me.
